Signs And Treatment Options For Ovarian Cysts

Blog

Ovaries are a key part of your ability to reproduce, since they produce the eggs and important hormones. Unfortunately, because they are usually out of sight, the ovaries may also be out of mind, meaning you do not place much thought into them until there is a problem. Cysts are a common problem many women face, but you may not realize how problematic they can be. This guide will help you understand the signs and treatment options for ovarian cysts.

Signs

Everyone is different, so you may experience different symptoms if you have ovarian cysts than another patient. In most cases, though, abdominal cramping, bloating, and pain is most common, since the ovaries are located near the abdominal area.

Other symptoms of ovarian cysts include abnormal or painful bowel movements, pelvic pain before and during your menstrual period, painful sexual intercourse, pain in the lower back and thighs, nausea/vomiting, and even breast discomfort. Most women will also develop abnormal periods, which may include heavy bleeding, spotting in between periods, and severe cramping.

If the cysts are large and more severe, you may be at risk of rupture. Ruptured ovarian cysts can cause different symptoms including severe, intense pain in the abdomen and pelvic area. If you are experiencing this severe pain, seek out emergency medical care.

Treatment

Most women are surprised to learn that no treatment is needed because many cysts will naturally go away on their own. However, there are instances where your doctor will recommend shrinking or removing the cysts.

Birth control pills may be prescribed if you have ovarian cysts. Oral contraceptives use hormones to prevent further cysts from developing while reducing the risk of the existing cyst's growth. This occurs by stopping ovulation.

Removing the cysts is also possible through a laparoscopic procedure. This treatment requires a small incision near the naval where a small instrument is used to remove the cyst from the ovary. If you have a larger cyst, a larger incision in the abdomen will be necessary.

It is important to note that while some cysts will not pose any problems, others could lead to many issues, such as pain and infertility. Therefore, consulting your gynecologist about potential cysts and possible treatment options is imperative.

Help is available if you believe you may have an ovarian cyst. This guide, your gynecologist, and a few simple tests will determine if you have cysts and what the best course of treatment will be.

They were really nice to work with, and before I knew it, I was having my first appointment. It was really fun to see the little heartbeat and to know that my baby was healthy and safe, which is why I was so happy that I found a great prenatal clinic. This blog is all about getting great prenatal care.
