Tips For Managing First Trimester Morning Sickness

Blog

If you are in your first trimester of pregnancy and are experiencing a lot of nausea, then you will be pleased to learn that there are many things you can do to help yourself feel better. Even if your "morning sickness" hits you at night or lasts for longer than the first trimester, you can use each of these time-tested tips to improve how you feel:

Tip: Try Eating a Bit of Fresh Ginger

For centuries women have been turning to ginger root to help settle their stomachs during early pregnancy. When you are feeling nauseated, grate a bit of fresh ginger into your tea or breakfast and it will help settle your stomach.

Tip: Find the Foods that Lessen Your Nausea and Stock Up on Them

While you are concerned about nutrition and making sure that your unborn baby is getting everything it needs to grow and be healthy, you must understand that during the times you are suffering from nausea, you should eat whatever foods make you feel better. You may find that crackers will settle your stomach, or you may find that ice cream is the only thing that will make you feel better. Try different foods, and then stock up on those that make you feel better. The important thing to keep in mind at this point is eating things that stay down.

Tip: Stay Hydrated with Beverages of Varying Temperatures

When you are pregnant, it is very important that you keep your body hydrated. If your body becomes dehydrated, then your nausea can become worse. To ensure that your nausea is not being exasperated by dehydration, make sure that you drink enough water during the day. If drinking tends to increase your nausea, then vary the temperature of the beverages you drink. For example, if cold water bothers you, then drink a warm cup of mild tea. Ultimately, what you decide to drink is far less important than drinking something throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Tip: Talk with Your Obstetrician If Your Nausea Is Excessive

Finally, if your nausea is excessive or lasts past the end of your first trimester of pregnancy, then you should speak with your obstetrician. Your doctor can give you specific advice about things you can do to feel better. Additionally, your obstetrician can prescribe you some medication to alleviate your nausea if it prevents you from working at your job or doing other normal everyday activities.
